They say a picture is worth a thousand words...

...why do you think they say that? Both words and images have a lot of power. They can inspire people, motivate people, and make people feel emotions perhaps they hadn't before. Writing and imagery are ways to connect with others, ways to tell old stories from new perspectives, and ways to give voices to others who have none.

For this assignment, I have chosen 4 videos for you to watch. Each video is trying to communicate a message, but for each video the message is different. In the first video, photography images are used, paired with music, "What I've Done," by Linkin Park.

The second video uses animated images paired with music to send a message. The song is "Do the Evolution," by Pearl Jam.

Sorry Guys, but for the 3rd and 4th videos I couldn't embed them here, so you need to paste the link into youtube to watch the following videos. You know how I am feeling about internet technology lately...

The third video uses music, real video, still photography and text - the song is "Runaway Train," by Soul Asylum.

The fourth video also uses music, real video, still photography and text - the song is "Right Now," by Van Halen.

SO: please watch all 4 videos. Choose one that you find interesting, and post a comment about what you saw, and what it made you think about. What sort of message was the video trying to tell you? Do you think they were effective in communicating? Why do you think people choose to use music and images to tell stories?

  1. My comment will be about pearl jam video. It is a good band, a good song and a good video, the creator of this video did a good job. This video try to make people think or know how humans since ancient ages wanted power or wanted to be over other people, killing, destroying or doing whatever to get that; and it wants to tell you and show you how through years this has not change, we see that in animals, groups of people, polititians and also common people addicted to consumption and power, creating a reign of hate, disaster, ego, and death. and this seem not disapper, because we think we have evolutioned but that is not true, we haven't and we have to know that we are all one, so in this video they say "Do the Evolution", because everything look is going to be the same. I think it is an effective video like many, but people would not get involve and won't try to do something, it is sad but true, people want to say something through videos, in cases like this, necessities, but the rest depends on the people.

  2. I choose “Do the evolution” by Pearl Jam.
I think this video has a kind of protest message in which lyrics are illustrated by very harsh and crude animated images. This strategy let them express several messages just in an few seconds, maybe more than if they would only use lyrics without images, so they complete the messages of the lyrics and the music with images and it really manage the public to get involved.
The message of the video is a kind of pessimistic and harsh. It shows what humanity has been able to do along the history in the “evolution’s name. It’s a kind of journey through the history of our world, which shows the more violent or remarkable facts that have lead us to important changes in our way of living, like the industrial revolution.
Basically I understood that our world is still as wild or even worst as it was at the beginning because we have always live with the law of the jungle. Due to that we have committed the majority of the crimes in the history of our era, like wars, racial discrimination, slavery, violence.
Another thing is that our world became wilder after the industrial revolution appeared, and right now we have an overdeveloped technology, which is contributing to pollute our planet, to destroy it with sophisticated weapons and to control men’s minds through the media and other tools. As much as we adore technology and all its benefits, we are kissing the death.
In summary the video made me think that we haven’t change so much through the times and that we still have to work a lot in ourselves to say that we are really evolving.

  3. Hey finally....
I dont like at all the video "do the evolution "by pearl jam.
Full of harsh, heavy ,negatives images about the human condition.
Of course the criator of this video can put toguether all the bad behaviour from our species in the passing of the history but when you finish to wach the video do you feel motivate to make a change, is a open invitation to be a better person?
Or...just give you the bitter taste...that human condition is always going down to the decadent ,negative and dark part inside themselses when the people is selfish and bad for nature.
Thats something that i dont want to see...because i am a optimistic and positive person that i want to show and stand out the other side of the coin which means believe in the human race.
but...! I love the music in this video.!. It is a great band...and music sound so cool.(of course with out words).anyway...

  4. Well, my coment is about the Pearl Jam´s video, this video is disgusting for me but I haven´t more options, the other videos are not avaiable in our country, anyway. The Pearl Jam´s video is a perfect example to show the human decadence, the worst of us, this video show the reality in different scenarios: politic, economic, and social among others. Humans are the only species that attack themselves, that destroy their creations and their habitat. The ambition of the human race, has surpassed even its self-preservation and this is precisely what the video shows. I dislike the video because it seems that there were no more options than resigned to the seemingly imminent destruction of the planet and its living creatures, and I refuse to believe that.

    Ximena.
